Hybrid Vehicle Components and Gasoline Engine Management System |
Improving both the environmental and driving performance of hybrid vehicles with DENSO’s state-of-the-art components. Hybrid vehicles successfully reduce CO2 emissions while continuing to deliver powerful acceleration with sophisticated control systems that combine engine and electric motor. To support complex hybrid vehicle systems, DENSO provides products based on its cutting-edge technologies. These include well-established engine control devices, traction inverters for controlling electric drive motors and regenerating energy, and drive battery monitoring units for power electronics systems. Traction inverters are critical to the control of electric motors. DENSO provides inverters boasting the world’s top discharge power density with a new cooling technology that limits temperature levels in built-in semiconductor power devices. This cooling technology is based on both radiator cooling technologies and electronics technologies that have been developed through in-house production of semiconductor devices.

|
Diesel Engine Management System |
Common rail technology for reduced noxious substances in diesel emissions. Diesel engines offer higher fuel efficiency and lower CO2 emissions than gasoline engines. However, they discharge particulate matter (PM) and nitrogen oxide (NOx) compounds. DENSO's common rail technology simultaneously reduces both of these air pollutants and helps to create more environment-friendly diesel engines. Common rail systems atomize fuel through a high-pressure injection process so it burns more effectively and produces less PM. Unlike conventional single injection systems, common rail systems produce multiple injections of small and highly precise fuel quantities in order to avoid rapid increase in combustion temperature thus reducing the production of NOx. With as many as nine injections per combustion cycle, DENSO’s most advanced common rail system operates as high as 200 MPa (2,000 bar). DENSO was the world’s first manufacturer to mass-produce a common rail system in 1995.

Permanently Engaged Starter |
Helping a start and stop system provide smoother operation, lower engine vibration, reduced noise, and greater fuel economy. DENSO has developed a starter specifically tailored for such systems to help significantly improve occupant comfort and fuel efficiency. Conventional starters push a pinion gear to engage the engine ring gear when starting the engine. In contrast, DENSO’s permanently engaged starter has a one-way clutch and other new mechanisms that enable the pinion gear to constantly mesh with the engine ring gear. The starter does not need time to engage the mating gears, and the almost immediate engine restart in response to the driver’s accelerator input provides a better operational feel. Because of the engine reversal prevention clutch, damper, and other advanced internal mechanisms, DENSO’s permanently engaged starter helps suppress vibration when the engine is stopped and noise when the engine is restarted.

Radiator Tank Made from Plant-derived Resin |
A product that offsets CO2 emissions when combusted
Petroleum-based resins release carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions into the atmosphere when they are combusted, contributing to the global warming effect. Plant-derived resins made from plant compounds, however, have less negative impact on the environment because CO2 is absorbed during the plant’s photosynthesis.
DENSO has developed a plant-derived resin radiator tank as a substitute for conventional petroleum-derived resin radiator tanks. The new product consists mainly of a compound derived from castor-oil, which is extracted from castor bean seeds.
Radiator tanks, used in the engine compartment, must be extremely heat resistant and durable. Previously, it was nearly impossible to produce commercial radiator tanks that contained more than 20 percent plant-based resin. But DENSO, working jointly with DuPont, has developed a resin with 40 percent of its raw materials derived from plant. The new resin meets stringent requirements for radiator tanks.

Research on Absorbing CO2 into algae to create biofuel |
By using photosynthetic capacity of micro algae, DENSO is trying to reduce CO2 emissions from DENSO's factories and to produce biofuels. DENSO's goals are to resolve energy issues and to prevent global warming through the development of environmentally friendly factories.
Holding patents on the research of newly discovered algae, DENSO has begun joint research with Keio University's Institute for Advanced Biosciences since April 2008.
This algae called "pseudochoricystis" lives in ponds and hot springs. It is small plant, yet at only 5 micrometers (1/200mm). Normally, plants absorb carbon dioxide and use it to produce starches through photosynthesis; pseudochoricystis not only creates starches, but actually produces oil, too. This oil contains light oil elements that can be used in diesel engines. Pseudochoricystis grows more rapidly and is easier to cultivate than other forms of tiny algae.

SiC Power Devices |
New semiconductor to lead the next generation of motor control Hybrid vehicles and electric vehicles are important options for CO2 emissions reduction and energy problems solution. To control the traction motors of these vehicles, inverters are essential components.
Silicon carbide (SiC) is a promising material for power devices for inverters, etc. Compared to current power devices made of silicon (Si), SiC power devices will pave the way for smaller yet more powerful inverters, since SiC withstands higher voltage and higher temperature, and suffers less power loss than Si. One of the biggest hurdles in commercializing SiC power devices is the need to create SiC wafers with the high crystallinity required in on-vehicle power devices. DENSO has been working to produce higher crystalline SiC wafers, and succeeded in producing SiC wafers with the smallest level of defect density in the world ミ some hundreds per one square centimeter.

Sensing System |
Improved vehicle protection with a sophisticated sensing system
Pre-crash safety system and lane-keeping assist systems help to keep a vehicle safe by detecting the risk of an accident and minimizing damage in the event of a collision. The key technologies of these systems are sensors that monitor surroundings and signal processing systems.
Millimeter-wave radar sensors continuously measure the distance and relative speed of the vehicle ahead and inform the driver of collision risk. Vision sensors monitor the lane markings to alert the driver if the vehicle is about to cross a lane boundary because the driver has taken their eyes off the road or is driving carelessly, for example.

Full TFT Color LCD Instrument Cluster Featuring Night View System with Pedestrian Detection Function |
Providing drivers with more information than conventional instrument clusters and in an easy-to-read format.
DENSO developed the world’s first full thin film transistor (TFT) color liquid crystal display (LCD) instrument cluster. It provides a wide range of information that can be viewed graphically in different display modes according to the driving situation and to meet the driver’s preferences.
In addition to engine speed and fuel level information, DENSO’s new instrument cluster provides a variety of useful information for greater driving safety and comfort. Its near-infrared-based Night View System, for instance, assists with night driving by clearly displaying pedestrians and obstacles in the road ahead. The System also highlights pedestrians to inform the driver of their presence.
In conjunction with a car navigation system, DENSO’s new instrument cluster allows for many other functions, such as guidance assistance in driving lanes and at intersections.

|
Image Recognition Technology |
Improved safety through enhanced driver visibility
DENSO is making an effort to respond to the increased demands for products that provide enhanced driver assistance. Image recognition is a driver assistance technology that uses an in-vehicle camera to help expand the driver’s awareness of their surroundings.
DENSO has developed a software application that immediately identifies road signs in images taken by the camera in a moving vehicle. The highly sophisticated technology identifies signs of different sizes and angles, as well as those with missing parts.

Passenger Vehicle Air Conditioning System Using an Ejector |
A new vehicle air conditioning system with reduced compressor power consumption for improved vehicle fuel efficiency.
DENSO, manufacturer of the world’s first ejector for truck refrigeration units and household CO2 heat-pump water heaters, has further reduced the size of the product to allow it to be installed on conventional vehicle air conditioning systems. Compared to standard systems, this enables ejector-equipped car conditioners to reduce compressor power consumption by about 25 percent.
Much of the energy consumed by vehicle air conditioning systems is used in the compressor when it compresses circulating refrigerant that cools the air. DENSO’s new system uses an ejector, instead of an expansion valve, which also works as a pump to reduce the pressure of the refrigerant and circulate it effectively. This advantage allows expansion energy generated during refrigerant decompression to be used to reduce the compressor’s power consumption, thus helping increase vehicle fuel efficiency.
|
|
Small Air Conditioning Unit for Compact Vehicles |
A vehicle air conditioning unit redesigned to maximize an occupant’s cabin space in compact vehicle designs.
DENSO has developed a blower that is about half its previous size, making the new vehicle air conditioning unit 20 percent smaller in volume.
In conventional design, the main air conditioning unit is separate from the blower unit which houses the blower fan and is located under the front passenger glove box. DENSO’s new system, however, combines the two units by placing a blower on the main component. It is located behind the center console between the two front seats and creates more leg room for the front passenger.
|
|
Remote Touch Controller |
Easy driver operation of vehicle cabin technologies
DENSO’s Remote Touch Controller, located on a vehicle’s center console, allows a driver to freely control a car’s navigation system, audio system, air conditioning system and other cabin units without having to touch them. The driver operates a pointing device in the center of the controller to set and select different functions.
The pointing device works with the cursor on a display screen, which moves up and down and side, similar to a computer mouse. This is the world’s first such controller in a vehicle that allows the drive to move the cursor vertically and horizontally.
The controller uses electric motors that create a realistic feeling when the driver moves their finger on the pointing device button in order to move the cursor closer target icons on the screen. This function helps the driver use the controller easily and properly.
